Interview with Melissa from Genevieve Laurent

What is the inspiration for your collection?

Modern glamour mixed with old fashion classics inspire me. I'd love to see what Audrey Hepburn would wear today and I'd love to know what Kim Kardashian would have worn in the old days. I love over the top glamour, women with curves and those who want to show them. Why hide what's naturally beautiful. Eva Medes, Kim Kardarshian and Megan Gale are gorgeous women who have killer curves and use power poses when they're gleaming in a sexy off the shoulder gown. It's knowing what you have and how to use it.

What colour palette do think works best for summer 2011/12?

I have always been a big lover of whites, it's so fresh and crisp, it will never go out of fashion, that goes with many other neutral colours such as different shades of grey, beige, or black. However I think it's fun to spice it up with some bright colours for summer. The Genevieve Laurent collection is all about feminine, glamorous looks so I've used pinks, purples, yellows and a dash of red for those evenings out with the man.

What's your favourite piece from your current collection and why?

My favourite piece would have to be the long white silk chiffon gown, its so sexy, feminine and breezy, perfect for any special occasion in Summer.

Describe the first thing you ever designed

The first thing I ever designed were pajamas! I made myself these cute little summer shorts and a singlet. Lingerie is definitely something I'd love to design in the future.

What got you interested in fashion?

My love for glamorous dresses, celebrities and my father. He was a tailor and so after 10 years of working in a field I wasn't happy with I finally decided to follow in his footsteps and so thankful that I did. Finally I realised why I was born - to be creative.

What has been the greatest challenge for you so far?

Sticking to what I naturally love to design -glamorous pieces. Sometimes I'm asked to design mens wear, maternity and childrens wear but glamour is where my heart remains. So I find myself challenged to stick with glamour and not stray to design casual wear.

What is your first fashion memory?

Looking over my fathers old Harpers Bazaar, Elle and Vogue magazines as a child. He had collected them from London in the 1950's and 60's. Unfortunately they were all thrown in the bin by accident. Oh how I wish I had of kept them.

How do you come across the textiles you use?

I find inspiration from jewellery, flowers, paintings, the ocean or simply a beautiful fabric I saw someone wear. A lot of my initial designs and ideas come straight from my own thoughts. I find it quite easy to come up with an idea, the problem lies within designing what exactly the consumer will prefer. If I had no limitations I would create every design I have ever thought and have the biggest store in the world.

Are there any celebrities/artists/icons that you take inspiration from when designing?

Absolutely, celebrities like Eva Mendes, Jennifer Hawkins, Kim Kardashian and Scarlett Johansson are forever giving me inspiration however I give most credit to designers such as Alex Perry, Rachel Gilbert and Camilla Franks for their gorgeous feminine designs. It's inspiring to say that they are Australia's finest artists.

Now the question on everyone's lips... Where can we buy designs?

This is my first major collection so I am on the hunt for Buyers Australia and Worldwide, I would love nothing more than to get my collection in stores and on the racks in time for the exciting summer season.
