Mogil is what happened when designer Gil Cowen took a chance, believed in her abilities and of course, took responsibility for her long held dream of one day becoming an Accessories Designer for her own leather goods range.
Beginning life eight years ago on a borrowed $1000 as a small 10 piece range of leather bags and belts that Gil pieced together during the hours away from her full time job, the Mogil range now extends across shoes, boots and overnight travel accessories. Not limited to success in Australia, Mogil has been steadily expanding into designer stores all over the world including Canada, the UK, New Zealand and Asia. There are 82 different skin colours and trim details, built from an evolving mixture of latest season palettes against tried and true classics –a kaleidoscope of possibility.
Mogil’s signature style is instantly recognisable utilitarian, classic style met with a raw toughness. Featuring unique buckle applications, blended skin finishes and detailed construction, each piece becomes an instant classic.
The Mogil Girl loves leather. Her look is pretty punk. She wears metallics clashed with neutrals. She contrasts multi-buckled belts with don’t care slouch bags. She is ready for anything. Lives life to the full and is probably a traveler and always a dreamer.
The key is always about contrast and the unexpected.
The motto at Mogil is ‘We can do anything’, and owner Gil Cowen is passionate about controlling all elements of the manufacturing process to ensure this statement is a reality – so much so she has relocated her family and life to work from Bali.
If it can be dreamed it can be developed.
Welcome to Mogil.
In New York City's 59 th Street Subway station there is a mural by artist Elizabeth Murray that reads, 'In dreams begin responsibility'.
A world away in a small village on the island of Bali, designer Gil Cowen has not only taken on the responsibilities to make her dreams happen, but has turned those dreams into a burgeoning success with her leather goods label Mogil.
Mogil began life on a borrowed $1000 as a small 10-piece range of leather handbags and belts, which Cowen pieced together in the hours away from her full time job. Inspired by a trip to Bali, where instead of lying on a beach, Cowen's attention was taken by the extraordinary skills of local craftsman. Having always had a penchant for design and an obsession with handbags, Cowen immediately began thinking of ways she could apply the traditional handmade aesthetics into her own range of leather products.
Five years on, Mogil is now a fully-fledged leather goods brand that produces over 400 designs a year. The range has grown from handbags and belts, to now include boots, shoes, wallets, hats, overnight travel bags and now a full Men's collection of shoes and accessories. Not limited to success in Australia, Mogil has been steadily expanding into top designer boutiques in Canada, UK, New Zealand and Asia.
It's the instantly recognisable utilitarian, classic style met with a raw toughness that is Mogil's signature style. Featuring unique buckle applications, blended skin finishes and detailed construction, each piece becomes an instant classic. This has recently been substantiated by the sheer volume of editorial coverage.
Cowen's best inspiration, her angelic son Tetahi, has just celebrated his second birthday. With the passing of this major milestone in his life and as always with our children as our teachers; we, at Mogil are reminded that everyday is a gift and an opportunity to learn , create and embrace possibilities however elusive they seem.
