THE HISTORY OF HUSSY
From humble beginnings in 1995, Sydney-based Marie Hatzis created the Hussy label as a tight collection of design driven garments to fill a gap in the market – and her wardrobe! Since then, she has built the Hussy brand into one of Australia’s most well-known labels – winning a cult following through strong business acumen combined with fresh and innovative designs, glamorous tailoring and striking accessories.
In 2001, Hussy opened its first flagship store in Sydney’s Darlinghurst, amidst a cool selection of up and coming boutiques, cafes, bars and jewellery stores. This was soon followed by a second store in The Strand Arcade in the Sydney CBD, followed by the opening of a flagship Melbourne store in the prestigious GPO Building.
In 2006, Marie launched Hussy’s sister label Madame Marie, a luxe, ultra-feminine label comprising of a plethora of indulgent pieces for a highly wearable look that can be taken effortlessly from day into night. With each collection showcasing a beautiful range of elegant dresses and luxuriously soft separates accentuated with the finest detail, Madame Marie has become a globally recognised women’s wear brand in its own right.
When celebrities like Julia Roberts and Kelly Rowland began shopping at Hussy, the brand’s international cult status was set in stone. Both Hussy and Madame Marie have become some of Australia’s leading fashion exports, with a presence in top boutiques around the world including Fred Segal Trend and Big Drop, USA, Austique and Coco Ribbon in the UK, Frees & Maha Mahna, Japan and Zilly & Enny Di Monaco in Greece – just to name a few.
In June 2008, Hussy continued its international expansion with the opening of its very first international flagship store in the uber-chic district of Seminyak in Bali. A frequent traveller to Bali for both work and play, Marie spotted the market opportunity to cater to the influx of discerning international visitors that flock to the island and so opened the Bali store, echoing the unique design aesthetic and A-list customer experience seen in Hussy’s Australian stores.
In addition, April 2009 will see the opening of the label’s fourth Australian store in Surfer’s Paradise, Queensland in the chic Circle on Cavill retail precinct.
